LAKEPORT >> A cracked main leaked a large amount of water onto the streets near the Lake County Courthouse in Lakeport Tuesday night.
At about 8:40 p.m., a Lakeport Police Department officer observed water bubbling out of North Forbes Street in between Seventh and Eighth streets. According to LPD Chief Brad Rasmussen, the spill flowed further down Forbes and into Ninth Street.
“It was a significant amount of water,” Rasmussen said, uncertain of the exact amount lost.
Responding quickly to the scene were crews belonging to the city’s Public Works Department. Upon digging under the northbound lane, they found that the six-inch main had developed a crack and needed replacing.
The project, Rasmussen added, forced a closure in both of the street’s lanes until about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Yet, their work didn’t fully complete until 3 p.m. as the crew also had to perform temporary fixes to the asphalt damaged by the leakage.
Service to the city’s municipal customers was fully restored, the chief said. North Forbes Street can be driven on but it will need full repaving at a later time.
