LUCERNE >> The Lake County Sheriff’s Office identified the pedestrian who died on Saturday after being struck by a car while trying to cross Highway 20.

According to LCSO Lt. Steve Brooks, the victim was Lucerne resident Herbert Edward Muellerleile.

The accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Highway 20 and Pomo Way. The driver failed to spot Muellerleile until it was too late. Although he swerved, the impact carried enough force to throw the victim first against the windshield and finally onto the shoulder.

Emergency medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Law enforcement officials investigating the incident determined that the driver was not impaired.

Muellerleile was 84 years old.
