LOWER LAKE >> There are not many people around anymore who remember the heyday of radio, when dramas, comedies, and other forms of entertainment filled the airwaves. Many shows were broadcast in front of a live studio audience, who shared in the sorrows and joys of the characters, joining those who did the same huddled in front of their radios at home.

Soon Lake County will have the rare opportunity of reliving the good old days of radio. Opening December 10 and continuing with four more performances, the Lake County Theatre Company presents “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” set in a New York radio station on Christmas Eve in 1946.

Five actors bring to life over thirty characters from the familiar holiday classic. The play’s foley artist uses a variety of objects and materials to produce all the required live sound effects.

“In this play the audience is more than just spectators — they are part of the show,” said director Linda Guebert. “They play the radio studio audience, so they are very involved.

“We are encouraging audience members to dress in 1940’s style so they can really ‘play their part,’” she adds.

The cast includes Nick Powell, Cindy Sobel, Charles Berry, Kathleen Escudé and Larry Richardson. Bert Hutt is the foley artist.

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” will be performed at the Weaver Auditorium at the Schoolhouse Museum in Lower Lake on December 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m.; Sunday performances, at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 ($15 for first two rows), with a $2 discount for students, seniors and LCTC members. Tickets will be available soon at the Soap Shack in Lakeport, the Game Hub in Lower Lake and online at lctc.us. For more information call 279-4272.
