KELSEYVILLE >> Riley Goff hit the ground setting from day one at Kelseyville High School. That was more than three years ago. Three years later her list of career accomplishments is pretty impressive and hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Goff, the two-time most valuable player on the All-North Central League I team, has signed a letter of intent to attend Sonoma State University on a volleyball scholarship. A varsity player from day one with the Knights, Goff’s individual success translated into plenty of team success for the varsity volleyball program at the school. She received All-League honors four straight years, earning second-team recognition her freshman and sophomore years and MVP honors last season and again this season while helping lead the Knights to 14-0 league records both years.
Kelseyville won three league championships in all during Goff’s career and her setting made the Knights’ offense go more times than not. Her legacy with the volleyball program includes a 34-match league winning streak she’ll bequeath on next year’s Kelseyville squad, which will have the unenviable task of trying to replace her in the starting lineup. In Goff’s four seasons the Knights posted a 95-32 overall record, including 53-3 in league.
Goff had virtually no chance of going unnoticed in regard to Sonoma State University’s ultra-successful volleyball program. That’s because the Seawolves’ head coach, Bear Grassl, conducts a camp in conjunction with the Knights every summer at the school’s gym.
Sonoma State finished 15-12 last season, including a 12-6 record in conference play. The Seawolves’ roster currently lists three setters.
Grassl led Sonoma State to back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) titles in 2014 and 2015. He is 276-154 in 15 seasons with the Seawolves, including 198-70 the last nine years.
Goff isn’t just a volleyball star at Kelseyville but a three-sport star although she will sit out the upcoming basketball season while recovering from an injury that cut short her 2015-16 basketball season. She plans on playing softball in the spring before graduating from Kelseyville next June.
It’s the second time in six months the Seawolves have signed a Kelseyville athlete to a scholarship. They signed baseball star Noah Lyndall last spring.
