FOLSOM >> Middletown High School sent three of its girls wrestlers to the Folsom Tournament on Saturday and two brought home fourth-place medals in their first action of the 2016-17 season.
Kylie Dredge, competing at 143 pounds, and returning state wrestler Alixe Olson, competing at 160 pounds, each went 2-2 to secure fourth-place finishes.
Dredge, a sophomore, was off to a great start in 2015-16 before a knee injury cut her season short.
“She’s very aggressive and you can’t coach that,” Middletown coach Brian Hunt said. “We can teach you technique, we can improve your stamina, but aggressive is something you either are or aren’t.”
Both of Dredge’s wins were by pin.
“She wrestled really well,” Hunt added.
Olson lost a hard-fought 7-3 decision in her final match to last year’s section runner-up or she would have brought home a third-place medal.
Rachel Harvey, also competing at 160 pounds, finished 0-2 in the tournament.
“It was a good way to start the season and knock off some of the rust,” Hunt said. “It’s a great way to gauge where you’re at.”
Middletown has six girls wrestling this season, down from previous years.
Middletown’s more inexperienced boys and girls return to action next Saturday in Point Arena during the Coastal Mountain Conference Novice Tournament.
