God’s way
First Lutheran Church, Lucerne
Pastor Chris DelCol
On the second Sunday of Advent, we continue with our sermon series on “Family Life” and look at Luke 1:57-66. This passage is specific to the naming of John the Baptist and the conflicts that arise when the family looks beyond the traditional way of doing things and instead focuses on God’s way of doing things. More specifically, when family conflict comes we are tempted to say, “My way!” “No way!” or “Your way!”
Is there a better way? You bet there is! It’s Zechariah and Elizabeth’s way. They resolve their conflict with these powerful words — “Our way which is always God’s way!”

Expectation, wonder and surprise
Galilee Lutheran Church
Lay leader Debra Blum
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” These familiar words from Isaiah presage the birth of the Messiah, and also give us hope in these modern times. Have we seen the light? Can we find our way out of the darkness?
Oddly enough, this and the Gospel lesson (the Christmas story from Luke 2) are usually reserved for Christmas Eve. But this year we get them early in the season. Is this a spoiler for later in December? Do we get the end of the story first? Life is full of surprises, and we at Galilee have never ceased to wonder at the curves that God throws at us from day to day. It only increases the expectation and wonder that we experience when we encounter the living and loving God in our lives.
In celebration of the 500th year of the Protestant Reformation, we are singing each Sunday a hymn written by Martin Luther. By the end of the year, we will either love his music, or we will all be Baptists. The jury is still out on this issue.
On Tuesday nights, our Bible Study is beginning at 6:00, with a short meditative midweek Advent service from 7:15-8:00. Come for one or the other, or both!
Does life appear “a deep darkness”? Galilee Lutheran invites all who seek a “great light,” regardless of your current spiritual state, background, previous church experiences, race, gender, age or immigration status. We are located at 8860 Soda Bay Road, between the Riviera Shopping Center and Konocti Harbor Inn. Sunday service is at 10:00 am.
