SANTA ROSA >> Kelseyville High School’s wrestling team split its squad on Saturday, sending its girls to the Orange and Black Tournament in Santa Rosa and its boys to the Holiday Bash in Fort Bragg.

Both teams placed high — the girls second and the boys third — while several individuals secured medals.

At Santa Rosa, Kyle Marlin-Ambriz (101 pounds), Bailey Huggins (126), Vanessa Gonzalez (145) and Brianna Christian (235) all secured first-place medals to power the Knights to their runner-up finish in the team standings.

Second-place medals went to Jasmin Clarke (235), Korbyn Marlin-Ambriz (101) and Brianna Thomas (121). Melanie Guerrero didn’t bring home a medal but did post her first high school win.

At Fort Bragg, Alex Garcia dominated the field to win at 145 pounds and was named the tournament’s outstanding lightweight. Second-place medals went to Javontee Gregoire, who lost No. 1 seed Mike Cavender of Fort Bragg in the 182-pound finals, and to Aaron Teal at 195 pounds.

Third-place medalists were Nika Metreveli at 138 pounds ABD Bryan Carrillo at 170 pounds. Carrillo lost his first match of the tournament but came back to beat that very same wrestler in the third-place match.

Finishing fourth were Bryce Mandaville at 126 pounds and Patrick Mick at 152 pounds. Mick forfeited the third-place match after sustaining a shoulder injury in the consolation semifinals where he was the victim of an illegal slam.

Both the boys and girls are traveling to Brentwood on Thursday for the Lou Bronzan Invitational (boys) and the Brittany David Invitational (girls).
