LOWER LAKE >> Overcoming a sloppy first quarter, the Lower Lake Trojans rallied from an early 18-13 deficit to smack the Ferndale Wildcats 68-39 in non-league varsity girls basketball action on Wednesday night in Lower Lake.
Aleia Milano led the Trojans (6-5) with 20 points and five assists, Vanessa Hughes added 18 points and three assists, and Jolean Scarborough yanked down 17 rebounds to go along with 14 points.
“Aleia and Jolean were both really, really sick,” Lower Lake coach Dave Milano said. “Both were in bed all day. It was kind of a gutty performance by both of them.”
On Scarborough’s big night on the boards, Milano said, “She was putting in the work on the glass and getting a lot of second-chance points.”
Too many turnovers by the Trojans in the opening period allowed Ferndale to grab the early lead. Lower Lake battled back to take a 26-21 lead by halftime and put the game away with a 26-9 third quarter.
Ferndale is on a two-game Lake County road swing that concludes tonight with a game at Upper Lake. Lower Lake opens its North Central League I schedule on Tuesday night at home against Middletown and returns to action again on Wednesday with a non-league home game against Orland.
Lower Lake beat Ferndale in the junior varsity game 40-12.
