The downtown improvement project, which began last spring and honed in on Lakeport’s historic downtown stretch, ended recently. But the process of renovating the lakefront has only begun.
City manager Margaret Silveira said the city received a planning grant to begin the process of improving Lakeport’s public waterfront space.
“We’re just getting through with that Lakeport downtown project,” Silveira said. “What do we want to see on the lakefront so we can do appropriate zoning?”
Silveira explained that as of yet, no funds have been raised or set aside for the project itself, only for the first phases of planning. The city has already reached out to the public for ideas and concerns. She also said an improved lakefront could bring in more private sector funding.
“Everybody wanted to see some sort of walkway or promenade,” she said. “We just want to make sure there’s public access to the lakefront.”
