SACRAMENTO >> A year ago, Lower Lake High wrestler Blake Fredrickson set the school record for most wins by a freshman. A year later, Fredrickson has another record, and this one can’t be broken.
Fredrickson, now a sophomore, is the first Lower Lake wrestler to reach the finals and win his weight class at the Tim Brown Memorial Invitational, which took place Saturday in Sacramento. Seeded second in the field, Fredrickson beat William Giron of Turlock High School by 6-2 decision in the 108-pound finals. It was the only one of Fredrickson’s five matches during the tournament that wasn’t decided by pin.
Giron beat the tournament’s No. 1 seed in the semifinals.
“He was patient and his moves were just flowing,” Lower Lake head coach Ed Fuchs said of his standout lightweight.
Fredrickson received the tournament bracket, a medal and a custom blanket for his victory. He is 25-1 on the season.
Lower Lake took seven wrestlers to the high level tournament, according to Fuchs. Peerless Brooke had the next best finish after Fredrickson, placing seventh at 197 pounds. It was a busy weekend for Brooke, who wrestled nine matches in all and won seven. His only two losses were to the fourth- and fifth-place medalists.
Brooke labored through five matches on the first day alone, going 4-1.
Unseeded in the field, Brooke wrestled well both days, according to Fuchs. His only loss on Friday was a 3-0 decision to the No. 2 seed.
Brooke is 12-4 on the season.
Also for Lower Lake, Michael Jamison went 1-2 in the heavyweight division while Carlos Avelar went 2-2 at 154 pounds.
“That’s pretty good at Tim Brown for someone who is not a big name,” Fuchs said of Avelar’s record at the tournament.
Despite sending only seven wrestlers, which is half a team, the Trojans placed 25th out of 78 teams.
While Lower Lake’s varsity boys were competing at Tim Brown, a handful of other Trojan grapplers participated in the Albany JV Tournament on Saturday.
Brandon Kyle won the 126-pound division, Kyle Lynn came in second at 138 pounds as did Krystal Lockwood in the 101-pound girls division, and Jacob Billings placed third at 152 pounds.
Lily Wetmore just missed out on a medal, taking fourth at 126 pounds. Medals were presented to the top three in each weight class.
Lower Lake’s wrestlers participate in their first Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet on Wednesday at Upper Lake. Point Arena is also attending. On Saturday, the Lower Lake girls compete in Vallejo while the boys head to the King of the Mat Tournament in Windsor.
