KELSEYVILLE >> Randy Pfann scored nine of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Kelseyville Knights survived a tough challenge thrown their way by the Middletown Mustangs, winning 49-37 in North Central League I varsity boys basketball action on Friday night in Kelseyville.

Kelseyville (5-1 league) took a 28-26 lead into the fourth quarter of this defensive struggle.

“We were able to hit some big shots down the stretch,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said.

Pfann made two 3-pointers and also had a three-point play as the Knights outscored the Mustangs 21-11 in the final period.

The two teams were never separated by much through the first three quarters.

“It was a defensive battle and I thought our kids played outstanding defense, limiting them to one shot most of the time,” Conrad said. “It’s the best game we’ve had with our defensive rebounding.”

Logan Barrick pounded the boards all night for the Knights and was a force inside with 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.

“He was pretty dominant,” Conrad said.

Kelseyville’s coach said Middletown’s defense played nearly as well as the Knights.

“Middletown deserves a lot of credit for us struggling to score,” Conrad said. “Twenty-eight points through three quarters is not many for us. They played real good defense and disrupted us.”

Kelseyville led 13-9 after one quarter and 20-17 at halftime.

Kyle Ellis joined Pfann and Barrick in double figures for Kelseyville with 13 points. Thomas Cook and Beckett Hoage had 12 points apiece for the Mustangs, now 2-4 in league.

“It’s always exciting when we played Middletown,” Conrad said. “G.J. (Rockwell, Middletown’s head coach) does such a great job with those kids.”

Kelseyville is home today to play El Molino in a non-league game. Junior varsity action tips off at 5 p.m.
