Giving life flavor

Galilee Lutheran Church

Lay leaders Debra Blum and Janis Andre

This Sunday’s Gospel lesson is the second half of the Sermon on the Mount found in the book of Matthew. This is the famous “salt of the earth” and “light of the world” message, brought this week by Debra Blum.

As salt, Christians are supposed to spice up the world, give life flavor, and make it more interesting. When was the last time you were excited about your faith, elated, mystified … salted? Most of us think of Christians are dour, serious people, full of “thou shalt nots.” Is this what we are meant to be?

And light … the light of the world. Illuminating, shining, blinding us with its brilliance. Is this the way the world sees us? Do they follow the teachings of The Way as a moth is attracted to a flame? Or do they see us as hold-outs from the Dark Ages?

Martin Luther said, “If God doesn’t have a sense of humor, then I don’t want to go to Heaven.” So laugh … love … live! Be the barbecue sauce on the ribs of life! And lighten the dark corners of lives around you.

Just food for thought.

More spiritual nourishment is available at 8860 Soda Bay Road, at 10 a.m. on Sunday. We invite everyone who is feeling a little flat to join us.
