UKIAH — Alex Garcia and Bryan Carillo of the Kelseyville High School wrestling team reached the finals in their respective weight divisions on Saturday during the Redwood Empire Classic at Ukiah High School.

Both came away with second-place medals. Garcia, the No. 1 seed at 140 pounds and ranked third in the North Coast Section, dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to non-section opponent Zack Hancock of Sutter Union High School. Carillo, unseeded in the 170-pound field, pinned the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds before squaring off against No. 1 seed Cody Shepard of Ukiah. Shepard, ranked third in the section, won by pin.

Kelseyville added a sixth-place medal at 182 pounds where Javante Gregoire dropped a 1-0 decision in the fifth-place match.

Garcia, Carillo and Gregoire are all sophomores.

In the all-girls bracket, Korbyn Marlin-Ambriz (101 pounds) went 2-1 to finish second while teammate Brianna Christian (235 pounds) came in second with a 3-1 record. Melanie Guerrero finished just shy of a medal at 1-2.

The Kelseyville girls are gearing up for the NCS tournament this weekend at Albany High School.

“We’ve had a solid season with our whole team and have been battling some injuries, but we’re hoping to have a strong showing with our ladies this weekend,” Kelseyville assistant coach Adam Garcia said.

Jasmin Clarke, a third-place finisher at 191 pounds during last year’s sectionals, is one of four Kelseyville wrestlers seeded in the tournament. Clarke is the No. 2 seed at 191 pounds, Christian is the No. 4 seed at 235 pounds, and Kyle Marlin-Ambriz and Bailey Huggins are the No. 6 seeds at 101 and 121 pounds, respectively.

In the junior varsity division at Ukiah, Michael Beverlin came in first with a 4-1 record and Liam Terrell came in second with a 3-1 record.

Kelseyville’s boys are entered in the NCS Team Duals on Saturday at Lower Lake High School.
