Students from Upper Lake Elementary School had a hard time leaving Taylor Observatory on Saturday, Feb. 11. Riley Bowers-Henry, a fifth grader stated most passionately: “I’d rather go here than to school. It’s the best day I’ve ever had!” The third to fifth grade students started off their day being wowed by an “awesome” planetarium show. Carolyn Ruttan, volunteer from the Lake County Water Resources Department, used the amazing interactive sandbox to deliver fascinating information about Clear Lake. It was hard for students to wait until the end to keep their fingers from the brightly colored and ever-shifting sands. Students became scientists as they predicted, then accurately determined, the incredible surface tension properties of water. Hands-on time building and programming Lego robots, with a focus on gears, and then building with Magformers, which use magnets, rounded out the day. Here Daniel Soloroio and Maggie Maliray inspect their spinning top handle to see if it is assembled correctly. Lakeport Elementary School is scheduled for the next Saturday session, March 11. – Contributed photo
