Lake speed limit
Well so much for “operator discretion” when it comes to lake speed limits. In the space of two we weeks we have gone from 5 mph to “operator discretion” to now, oars and paddles.
The operator discretion idea was an ill-conceived non-starter. Did anyone seriously believe that highly competitive “pro” bass fishers would use discretion when blasting across the lake heading for their favorite honey hole? Hey there’s a reason these characters buy 250hp motors vs. puny 150hp motors.
As we now see “operator discretion” translates into full speed ahead.

Regarding the new courthouse
If the county struck it rich then a new courthouse makes sense. But if it hasn’t I believe the county is broke and we get money from the state, it will not be free one way or the other it will cost us taxpayers somehow.
But if we have our hearts set on a new courthouse we have two choices. We could build it south of KFC. The property to the south and directly across the street from AAA, it is an old walnut orchard and has not been maintained; so there is no loss there. It would be something good, with sewer, water and PG&E and it is good clay soil. Easy building with plenty of room for parking and the property is for sale at this time, as I saw a sign parallel to the freeway to Hopland Grade.
Our old courthouse would be down the street and around the corner only blocks away. Close to our Sheriff’s department, close to our City Police department, and it is in the city limits of Lakeport, close to the freeway on and off ramps and down the road a piece from Main Street; close to Bruno’s which would be handy for county employees, handy for attorneys and handy for everyone else.
The next alternative would be to rent an empty building downtown and for the current courthouse’s third floor departments and move the Planning and Building departments together. Our Planning dept. meets on Thursdays, so they could use the Board Chambers for meetings if they did not have enough room. That would save taxpayers a lot of money and would be a good handy asset for the County; because right now, I feel, the county is strapped with more than they can handle.

Be involved in Dollar General decision
Dollar General Stores has proposed a 9,000 square foot two storey building at the corner of Soda Bay Road and Point Lakeview Road in the Clear Lake Riviera. This exceeds the Lake County guidelines for the area by 1,000 square feet.
This development proposal will be put before the Lake County Planning Commission on this Thursday, February 23, at 9:am. It is the first agenda item.
Anyone who would like to speak to the Commission regarding this development should be at the Board of Supervisor’s chamber at 8:55. Even if you do not wish to speak, your presence would be appreciated, and if you have thoughts you want to share, put them on paper; someone will read them for you.
Generally, people do not become interested until they see the construction in progress. Then they say, “I didn’t know anything about this,” or “I didn’t realize it would be so big,” or, “who approved this project?”
If you go to this meeting, whatever the result, at least you would have participated in the process.
Please come and be involved.
