Long, somewhat convoluted story short, I have a new Red Prius. Not my choice for color but It is what it is. So, what’s with the color red? Red is fire! Red is movement. Red is transformative. Red is Pitta!
Remember the three Auryvedic doshas (mind/body types) vata, pitta, and kapha? In simplistic terms, they’re air/space (vata} fire/water (pitta) and water/earth (kapha).
So we know in nature that opposites taken together create balance. The lightness of air/space balances it’s opposite water/earth. Fire balances water. When we have excess heat, we need water. When there is excess water (think mucus or phlem) we need fire. If we have problems getting going (excessive earth heaviness) we need the movement of air to get going. When we are ungrounded, spacey and forgetful we may need the heaviness of earth element (kapha) to get grounded.
If there is a cold we need need heat producing herbs and diet to burn up the mucus and destroy the pathogens. So taking garlic and cayenne are usually great for a cold.
With diet, if we have a hard time moving (kapha) we may need foods that contain more air. (legumes)
My mind/body type is mostly Pitta. I tend to be a bit firey in nature, especially driving! Having a red car does not help that! Color is important. Color can be therapeutic. It can also be imbalancing.
Good colors for we fire (pitta types) are blue and green. (I love teal) because they’re cooling and calming. Kapha types usually do well with colors such as red, orange and yellow. Do you get the picture? Air types (vata) do best with grounding colors such as brown, gray and black.
So color therapy, as well as sound therapies are very important to creating or recreating balance of mind and body.
