LUCERNE >> Senior students at Marymount California University, Lakeside Campus, in Lucerne are completing their Capstone projects this semester. The goal is to acquire and use knowledge and skills related to business management, along with organizational research skills, to investigate and plan actions to address an organizational goal, need, initiative, or problem. The primary focus of the project is addressing a need in the community.

Capstone students have chosen projects that appeal to their own interests and opportunities to contribute to resolving a community issue. The Capstone project is not only planned to resolve the problem, but to contribute to the academic preparation and personal growth of the student.

Melissa Hodder has a particular interest in providing adequate, affordable housing to individuals in Lake County. Her central focus is on promoting the availability of substantial housing within a cost that can be generated by individuals who have some income. She is researching both the availability of affordable housing and the ability of low income individuals to pay for such housing.

Savannah Wolfin is interested in health care services for women and children in Lake County. She is investigating where women choose to birth their newborn and why that location is chosen. Her goal is to establish the foundation for creating a new birthing clinic in the county in order to better service the needs of expectant mothers.

Jesus Fonseca is concerned that a low percentage of high school graduates fail to take advantage of educational opportunities after graduation. As a preamble to finding ways to encourage high school graduates to continue in schooling, he wants to find out why students do not further their education. He is investigating the reasons that high school graduates in Lake County are not enrolling in higher education.

Yadira Ortiz is concerned about the ability of prospective employers to connect with qualified workers in Lake County. She believes that better employment opportunity services would serve to improve employment and business in the county. She is investigating the methods used by employers to attract prospective employees and the ways that prospective employees find out about job opportunities. Her goal is to help improve employment services.

Phyllis Forbes knows that modern methods of purchasing goods and services relate to use of the internet, and that this method of identifying and choosing prospective suppliers is increasing. She is concerned that many shoppers, particularly seniors, are not familiar with how to access these suppliers and thus miss out on purchasing opportunities. She is researching how seniors use the internet to purchase and how to improve this method through teaching and providing online services to under-served populations.

MCU students will complete their Capstone projects in April and display their finding at an open house at the Lucerne campus on Monday, April 24, 6-9 PM . They will graduate on the afternoon of Saturday, May 13. Both events are open to the public.
