MIDDLETOWN >> The spring sports season is officially under way in Lake County as the Firebaugh Eagles traveled some 213 miles out of their way to beat the Middletown Mustangs 17-6 in non-league varsity baseball action at Wes Martin Field.

“They’re a powerhouse in the Central Section to say the least,” new Middletown coach Jeff Mielke said of the Eagles. “It was a chance to give the kids a challenge, show them what kind of baseball we need to play to be successful.”

Firebaugh used an eight-run top of the second to build an 11-0 lead through three innings. Middletown scored three times in the bottom of the fourth and twice more in the fifth to make a game of it.

John Kelley went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Middletown and Ty Chorjel went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Devin Ross and Will Perez also had hits.

Middletown returns to action March 3 at home against McKinleyville at 3:30 p.m.
