LOWER LAKE >> Anderson Marsh State Historic Park remains open and continues to hold monthly guided nature walks.

The next guided walk is scheduled for Saturday, March 11. Meet in the parking lot at 8:15 a.m. for time to experience the early morning wildlife to be found in the Ranch House and Barn complex yard — the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.

There will not be a Ranch House tour after this walk.

Join Park Docent Billy Gear as he leads a leisurely walk to discover what the recent rains have brought to the Park. Assuming the ground is dry enough, the guided walk will start along the grasslands of Anderson Flats, go up the hill past a vernal pool and then take the Ridge or Marsh Trail.

Bring your binoculars and shoes that can handle a little mud and water.

Winter brings many migrating birds to the Park, some to rest in the waters of Cache Creek and Anderson Marsh or in the nearby trees. This is a unique opportunity to see something that hasn’t been seen in a while — the Anderson Marsh flatlands when the water is high. The high water has flooded portions of the grasslands in the Park and Canada geese, white egrets, great blue herons, white pelicans, double crested cormorants, wood ducks, mallards and mergansers have been seen taking advantage of this new aquatic environment.

The walk should take one and a half to two hours. Rain will cancel the walk.

Anderson Marsh State Historic Park is located on Hwy 53, between Lower Lake and Clearlake. For more information about the walks, email info@andersonmarsh.org or call (707) 995-2658. More information about AMIA can be found at www.andersonmarsh.org.
