GUERNEVILLE >> The sun was shining on the Kelseyville High School golf team — figuratively and literally — on Tuesday afternoon as the Knights opened their 2017 season with a 200-207 victory over El Molino at the par-36 Northwood Golf Course in Guerneville.

“It was nice to be some place where it wasn’t raining or snowing on us,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said of the Knights’ road trip to the western Sonoma County nine-hole facility.

Even better, Kelseyville has a complete team (five or more golfers) for the first time in two years, according to Berry.

“It’s nice to have a full team for a change,” Berry said. “We have six golfers. We’re very young and very inexperienced, but our hope is to come in second or third in our league and maybe get an at-large berth into the playoffs.”

Not all of the Knights are newbies. Junior Matt Wotherspoon, a two-year All-Conference standout for the Knights, is back and his 3-over-par score of 39 led the Knights on Tuesday. His round included Kelseyville’s only two birdies of the day. Jon Vanderwall was next with 49, Michael Beverlin carded a 53, and freshman Maddie Witt had a 59.

“It was a nice start to the season,” Berry said.

Kelseyville opens its Coastal Mountain Conference South schedule on March 15 at Rooster Run in Petaluma.
