UPPER LAKE >> Upper Lake pitcher Julia Mooney had to leave the game with shoulder tightness after three innings and the Kelseyville Knights jumped all over reliever Katlyn Minnis in the top of the fourth en route to a 17-1 non-league softball victory on Friday afternoon in Upper Lake.
The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
“She got a big knot in her shoulder,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said of Mooney, who left the game with Upper Lake trailing 5-1.
Kelseyville (2-0) scored 11 times in the fourth to break the game wide open.
“They’re pretty good,” Coburn said of the Knights.
Kelseyville shortstop Riley Goff went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in four runs, her second straight game with four RBIs, and Bailey Couey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Bib Hamner and Kailani Brown also added two hits apiece.
Allison Bryant, the Knights’ freshman pitcher, tossed a three-hitter while striking out four and walking three.
“She’s going to be a great pitcher in a couple of years,” Coburn said.
“We just need to stay focused, play defense and bunch some runs together,” Kelseyville coach Jeff Bour said. “I liked the way we ran the bases today.”
Adrianna Saldana went 2-for-2 with a double and a RBI for the Cougars. Cheyanne Obedoza had the only other Upper Lake hit.
Kelseyville hits the road again Tuesday to play Windsor at 4 p.m.
“Windsor should be a good test for us,” Bour said.
Upper Lake (1-2) returns to action on Thursday against Clear Lake in Lakeport, the first of three games in three days for the Cougars. They return home on Friday against Middletown and are home a week from today against Potter Valley.
