SANTA ROSA >> Santa Rosa built a 9-0 lead during the first three innings and went on to beat the Middletown Mustangs 13-3 in non-league softball action on Friday afternoon in Santa Rosa.
The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning because of the 10-run rule.
Both pitchers had to contend with a strike zone that didn’t have much in the way or corners, according to Middletown head coach Barry Glosser.
“You almost had to throw the ball down the middle to get a strike,” Glosser said.
Middletown pitcher Olivia Glosser, who normally doesn’t walk many batters, ended up issuing seven base on balls.
“She was pretty frustrated,” Glosser said of his daughter’s reaction to being squeezed by the home plate umpire.
Glosser also struck out seven as Middletown fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Mustangs were trailing 11-0 when they rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth. Elyse Brusha’s RBI groundout put Middletown on the scoreboard and Brittney Holt added a two-run single later in the inning.
Aly Ferguson went 2-for-3 for Middletown while Holt, Jessica Zell and Devin Clark had the Mustangs’ other hits. Clark’s hit was a double.
Middletown is on the road Tuesday to play El Molino in Forestville at 4 p.m.
