UPPER LAKE >> Pancho Flores’ pitching and hitting helped the Upper Lake Cougars pound the Potter Valley Bearcats 19-1 in the first game of a non-league varsity baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Upper Lake High School.
Upper Lake (4-1) came back to beat the Bearcats 16-0 in the second game.
Both ends of the doubleheader were called early because of the 10-run rule.
In the opener, Flores pitched a complete-game one-hitter while striking out eight and walking only one. He also went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs as part of Upper Lake’s 13-hit attack. Carson Whitfield also had a big first game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Benat Love went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Alex Sanchez and J.T. Claunch added a pair of hits apiece in the lopsided win.
In game two, Whitfield earned the win on the mound and combined with relievers Andrew Brackett, Ryan Robinson and Eddie Crandell on a seven-hit shutout.
Crandell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Dre Santos went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Anthony Serrano didn’t collect a hit but drove in three runs.
Upper Lake has now won three in a row.
The Cougars are scheduled to host Laytonville in a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m.
