ROHNERT PARK >> Threatening skies didn’t produce any rain on Wednesday although a two-club breeze and plenty of standing water on the Foxtail South course made it a plenty challenging afternoon for members of the Coastal Mountain Conference South, including golf teams from Kelseyville and Middletown.

St. Vincent won the day with a low team score of 365. Kelseyville (392) edged out Middletown (394) for second place and St. Helena (441) came in fourth. Technology and Geyserville had incomplete squads (fewer than four golfers) while Rincon Valley Christian’s team was a no-show for the second week in a row.

“We played under very black skies that appeared like they would open up at any time but we never had a drop,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “The course had a lot of standing water. It’s an old course dating back to the 40s and it doesn’t drain very well.”

Between the standing water and plenty of wind, the golfers had their work cut out and Kelseyville’s Matt Wotherspoon seemed to master the elements with a 3-over-par 75, the only sub-80 round of the day. The next-best score was Teo Malo’s 80 for Technology, followed by 82 for Geyserville’s Carson Kalvfleish and 83 for St. Vincent’s Graham Giles. Middletown’s Quentin Crayne (87) and Hayden Sust (89) were next in line.

“I think what helps him is he’s constantly competing,” Berry said of Wotherspoon, who along with partner Billy Witt finished second in the championship flight at last weekend’s Two Man Scramble at Buckingham Golf and Country Club. “I foresee many good things ahead for him.”

Wotherspoon carded three birdies during his round.

Also for Kelseyvlle, Mike Beverlin’s 91 and Jon Vanderwall’s 104 helped the Knights nip Middletown in team scoring.

“They both played better than a week ago,” Berry said.

Derek Coulter had a 92 for Middletown. Through the first two weeks of the CMC South season, St. Vincent leads the field with a 12-0 record while Kelseyville and Middletown are tied for second at 9-3.

CMC South teams return to action on March 30 at Hidden Valley Lake Course at 1:30 p.m.
