LOWER LAKE >> It’s been a busy time for members of the Punishers Wrestling Club of Lower Lake who recently competed in both the California USA State Championships in Fresno and the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Denver.
Approximately 2,000 wrestlers took part in the Rocky Mountain Nationals and another 1,500 at the California USA State Championships.
In Fresno, Megan Stottsberry, Adam Viramontes and Alexis Peregrina placed second in their respective weight classes. Stottsberry was pinned in the finals by Lillian Avalos of Hillmar in the 110-pound novice girls division while Viramontes was the runner-up in the 105-pound novice boys division. Peregrina lost in the finals of the intermediate girls division to Asha Wolford of Team Arcata.
Taking third was Isaiah Rubio in the 75-pound schoolboy division where he won his first match against Jordan Quiturgua from the California Grizzlies with a 52-second pin. He drew eventual champion Cisco Cabrero from Dethrone in the second round and lost by pin. Rubio responded by winning straight matches in the consolation bracket to finish third, the final victory against Logan Valledor of Vacaville in the third-place match.
Also for the Punishers, Carter Rudolph placed fourth in the 103-pound intermediate division, and Aiden Dancer finished sixth in the 65-pound intermediate division with a 3-2 record.
Hayden Fowler just missed advancing to the medal round in his division, going 3-2.
In Denver, Austin Fredrickson competed in the 12-and-under 66-pound division where he took third place. His brother, Jonathan Fredrickson, was entered in two divisions, taking third in the 15-and-under 75-pound division and fifth in the 72-pound class.
The third Fredrickson brother, Blake, went 4-2 in the 18-and-under division and missed the medal round by one win.
Mario Cuellar picked up a sixth-place medal in the 15-and-under 88-pound division where he posted a 4-2 record.
Next up for the Punishers is the SCWAY State Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
