UPPER LAKE >> Julia Mooney and Katlyn Minnis combined on a one-hitter and the Upper Lake High School defense played error-free ball in a 13-1 non-league softball victory over the Anderson Valley Panthers on Thursday afternoon in Upper Lake.

The rain held off until after the game, which was called after 4 ½ innings because of the 10-run rule. Upper Lake is now 3-4 on the season.

Anderson Valley’s lone hit, a clean single, came in the top of the first inning against Mooney, who struck out three and walked one during her two-inning stint. Katlyn Minnis worked the final three innings, striking out two and walking five.

Upper Lake scored in all four of its at-bats, including a six-run bottom of the fourth. Adrianna Saldana went 2-for-3 with six RBIs, Chelsie Valdez went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, Colleen Doyle went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Cheyanne Obedoza went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Kejhana Taylor (1-for-2) also tripled for the Cougars.

“They did a better job of fielding the ball today,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said.

Anderson Valley scored in the top of the fourth to make it a 7-1 game.

Upper Lake’s scheduled game Friday against Laytonville has been canceled. The Cougars return to action Tuesday in Esparto at 4 p.m.
