UKIAH >> Windy conditions had at least one benefit for the three Coastal Mountain Conference North golf teams, including the Clear Lake Cardinals, teeing it up Thursday afternoon at the par-70 Ukiah Municipal Course.

“The wind is hard to play in, but the wind dried a lot of things off,” Clear Lake coach Ted Mattila said. “That makes it (the wind) a little more manageable.”

The same three teams played at Ukiah a week earlier and standing water left over from a rainy winter season made playing conditions difficult, according to Mattila. Just one week later Clear Lake posted a team score of 441, its best of the season, to beat Willits (485) and Fort Bragg (509).

“Willits’ score also was its best of the season,” Mattila said.

Clear Lake improved to 8-0 in the North standings behind a team-best round of 106 from Nolan Williams. Willits’ Izak Walker had the low round of the day at 105.

Other individual rounds that counted toward Clear Lake’s team total were Sam Long’s 109, Dylan McGuire’s 113 and Brenden Allen’s 113.

Clear Lake returns to action next Thursday in a non-conference tournament at Windsor. The next CMC North match is April 18 at Buckingham Golf and Country Club, Clear Lake’s home course. Play begins at noon.
