MIDDLEOTWN >> Middletown’s defense committed seven errors and the offense struggled as well on Thursday afternoon as the Mustangs dropped a 13-0 non-league decision to Technology High School of Rohnert Park at Middletown, a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
It wasn’t the final tuneup that Middletown head coach Barry Glosser was looking for going into Friday’s North Central League I opener at Cloverdale. If anything, it was the exact opposite, according to Glosser.
“We spent all day yesterday in practice working on situational things … what to do if the ball is hit here or hit there. Today, every time one of those things that we worked on happened, we did the exact opposite. It was just a frustrating day all the way around.”
Middletown (1-5) will have to recover quickly because its opponent Friday, Cloverdale, is the league favorite entering this year’s race.
While Middletown’s defense had a rotten day against Technology, the offense wasn’t much better.
“Their pitcher turned out to be slower than we thought but we didn’t make the adjustments at the plate that we needed to,” Glosser said of Middletown’s four hits, all singles. “We should have had as many hits as they did (11).
“We put the ball into play, we struck out only two times, but we didn’t hit the sweet spot,” Glosser added.
Losing pitcher Olivia Glosser, Devin Clark, Jessica Zell and Kendall Mildenberger had a hit apiece for the Mustangs. Glosser pitched all five innings, striking out three and walking two.
Team notes: Middletown has forfeited a season-opening 11-7 win on March 2 at Healdsburg because it used an ineligible player in that game.
