NOVATO >> Kelseyville High School’s Matt Wotherspoon tied for the second lowest round on Monday during play in the second annual St. Vincent de Paul Invitational at Marin Country Club in Novato.
Wotherspoon fired a 1-over-par 37 on both the front and back nine to finish with a 2-over-par 74. Only Nick Friedman of team champion Mount Tamalpais did better with an even-par 72. Friedman’s teammate, Duncan Anderson, tied Wotherspoon for second place with a 74.
“Matt was able to come down here and play nine days ago and that helped him out here today,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said.
“He hit no drivers off the tee,” Berry said. “It played into his short-game and putting skills.”
Mount Tamalpais finished first with 318 (the combined rounds of the four low scorers) while Menlo School came in second with 329 followed by Casa Grande with 345, tournament host St. Vincent with 350 and Drake with 358. Kelseyville was 10th overall with 423.
The difficult course was a real eye opener for Kelseyville’s younger players, according to Berry, who said they will benefit from the experience down the road. “It’s really good for them to see a course like this.”
The private course was in perfect condition, according to Berry, and Monday’s weather conditions were idyllic..
“It was 75 degrees, just a beautiful day,” Berry said.
Kelseyville returns to action Thursday along with the other teams of the Coastal Mountain Conference South at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain. Tee time is 2 p.m. The Knights are also entered in the Ukiah Invitational next Monday at Ukiah Municipal Golf Course.
