GEYSERVILLE >> Not even a 10-1 lead was safe the way the Upper Lake Cougars were issuing walks on Wednesday during a non-league softball doubleheader at Geyserville.

Upper Lake wasted that nine-run lead in a 14-12 setback to the Broncos in game one and came back to lose the second game 10-6.

“Our pitching definitely didn’t help our cause,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said of the 10 walks issued by losing pitcher Julia Mooney in the opener and the 10 walks issued by losing pitcher Katlyn Minnis in game two.

“And we also committed eight errors (between the two games),” Coburn said.

Geyserville scored eight times in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one to wipe out Upper Lake’s 12-6 lead.

“That’s when most of Julia’s walks came,” Coburn said.

Upper Lake fell to 3-8 on the season with the sweep.

Most of the highlights for the Cougars came at the plate. In the first game, both Minnis and Chelsie Valdez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Cheyanne Obedoza went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. In the second game, Bailey Young went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Mooney went 2-for-3 with a triple.

Upper Lake is off until Wednesday when the Cougars hit the road to play Point Arena in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
