POINT ARENA >> After winning six of their first seven games this season, the Upper Lake Cougars managed just two hits in two games while being swept by the Point Arena Pirates in a non-league varsity baseball doubleheader on Monday in Point Arena.
Point Arena won the first game 6-5 after scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to wipe out a 5-2 Upper Lake lead. In the nightcap, the Pirates prevailed 6-3 while no-hitting the Cougars.
In game one, Upper Lake starting pitcher Francisco Flores worked the first five innings and left the mound with a 4-2 lead. The Cougars added another run in the top of the sixth to go up 5-2, but the Pirates scored four times in the bottom of the inning against reliever Eddie Crandell, who was charged with the loss.
Dre Santos had Upper Lake’s only two hits of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Flores didn’t have a hit but knocked in two runs.
In game two, Upper Lake took a 3-2 lead without benefit of a hit but Point Arena pushed ahead to stay with a two-run bottom of the third in the five-inning game. The Pirates added their final two runs in the fourth.
Andrew Brackett went the distance on the mound for Upper Lake.
The Cougars committed five errors in game two after making four in game one.
Upper Lake (6-3) hosts Rincon Valley Christian in a North Central League II game on Friday at 4 p.m.
