A crowd pleasing story

Galilee Lutheran Church

Lay leaders Doug Andre, Bob Hamilton

At 10 a.m. on Sunday, Galilee will celebrate “Bright Sunday.” This is a tradition dating back to medieval times. Easter Sunday is, of course, the day of the resurrection of Jesus and the defeat of death for all of us. The Sunday after Easter was set aside as a kind of “neener-neener” moment. Victory was snatched out of the jaws of the devil.

Jesus wins. Satan loses. Hence, “neener-neener.”

On this day, people would celebrate with picnics, jokes, singing, dancing, and water-fights. Yes, water-fights. Games of tag and three-legged races were the order of the day. For people stuck in the drudgery of feudalism, it was quite a party.

Galilee is having none of this. But, in honor of “Bright Sunday,” we will be striving for a lighter mood. The Gospel lesson is the story of “Doubting Thomas,” which is always a crowd-pleaser. Music will be provided on guitars and mandolin. All are invited to come celebrate with us.

At 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, we’ll be singing for the good folks at Rocky Point Skilled Nursing in Lakeport.

Galilee Lutheran is located at 8860 Soda Bay Road in the Kelseyville Rivieras.
