CLEARLAKE > > To celebrate Earth Day, nearly 100 people spent Friday and Saturday morning picking up trash and otherwise sprucing up neighborhoods in Clearlake. The diverse group included elected officials, volunteers, Clearlake Waste Solutions, and city staff.

“This event is an annual tradition in the City of Clearlake which has been going on for many years as a way to start off the tourist season with a clean central business district,” event organizer Doug Herren, Public Works Director for the City of Clearlake,

Elected officials participating in the cleanup included Mayor Russ Perdock, Vice Mayor Bruno Sabatier, Council member Phil Harris, Supervisor Jeff Smith, and City Clerk Melissa Swanson. Fire Chief Willie Sapeta, City Manager Greg Folsom, Acting Police Chief Tim Celli, and many other city staff members donated their time to the cause.

“It is such an inspiration to see so many people come out to spend their Saturday morning for the betterment of the community,” Perdock observed. “This is such a great city we live in. Thank you to all the volunteers and to the Citizens Caring 4 Clearlake who do such a great job for our city throughout the year.”

Teams covered areas from Austin Park to Redbud Park and to Old Highway 53, according to Folsom who led the group. He said they “nearly filled a dump trailer that was being towed by council member Phil Harris.”

“I definitely encourage the businesses located along Lakeshore Drive to continue to keep Lakeshore looking as good as it did when we finished,” Folsom added.

Bayberry, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, also took part in the cleanup at Austin Park in Clearlake. It marked their 12th year of participation in the cleanup. Alex Martinez from the City of Clearlake Public Works staff served in the role of safety and supervision for the event..

“We really appreciate organizations like Bayberry, Inc. that not only provide a tremendous service to the community with the work they do but also for the civic pride they show in giving back to the city. We look forward to working with them again next year,” Folsom said.
