HEALDSBURG >> Jimmy Rockwell was pretty much untouchable for five innings as the Middletown Mustangs ran their season record to 15-0 with an 11-5 win over the Healdsburg Greyhounds in non-league junior varsity baseball action on Wednesday in Healdsburg.
Rockwell, the winning pitcher, struck out eight and walked none during his five-inning stint on the mound. He allowed an early unearned run but blanked the Greyhounds after that and left the game with a 6-1 lead. Relievers Jaden Trueblood and Jack Sisson finished up, Sisson striking out three over the final 1 2/3 innings.
“He was dialed in,” Middletown coach Jon Hoogendoorn said of Rockwell. “They weren’t touching him.”
Healdsburg held a 1-0 lead until Middletown’s bats got going in the top of the fourth. The Mustangs erupted for five runs to push in front to stay. They added two more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Niko Barrio went 3-for-3 and Sisson went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored to power Middletown’s offense. Cameron Luis added a hit and a RBI while Trueblood and Isaac Perez also had hits.
The Mustangs return to their North Central League I schedule on Friday when they host Lower Lake at 4 p.m. Middletown is 7-0 in league play.
Track
At Cloverdale, the Middletown and Upper Lake track teams participated in a Coastal Mountain Conference meet at Cloverdale High School and Middletown scored several high finishes.
Among the varsity boys, Colton Hall won both the shotput (39 feet, 8 inches) and discus (123-11), Dimitri Imbrunetti was first in the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 47.70 seconds), Jeffrey Morris cleared 5-6 to win the high jump, Evan Dodd won the 110 hurdles (18.20 seconds) and temmate Amida Verhey was second (19.70), and Brenden Steele was second in the 400 (58.20). Mark Breiner added another second in the discus (100-3).
The Mustangs also picked up thirds in the 100 where Jared Hernandez finished in 12.10 and in the 300 hurdles where Verhey finished in 52.0.
Among Middletown’s varsity girls, Grace Southern won the 400 (1:10), Kelsey Lemoine dominated the field in the 100 at 13.50, a full second ahead of the second-place runner, Taelor Roderick won the shotput in 30-6, and Colleen Schimansky tied for first in the high jump at 4-4.
Second-place finishes went to Schimansky in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, to Samantha Hibner in the discus (84-7), and to Hanna Mooris in the shotput (29-9).
Placing third were Roderick in the discus (81-5), Alyssa Hart in the 300 hurdles (58.60), and Samantha Hibner in the shotput (28-7).
Among Middletown’s frosh-soph boys, Casey Chicoine won the 100 (12.20) and teammate Michael Giacomini was second (12.40); Victor Guzman won the 300 hurdles (57.40) and high jump (5-0); Jared Pyzer won the 3,200 (12:46.30); Chicoine tied for second in the 200 meters (27.0) and was third in the high jump (4-6); and Tyler Breiner finished third in the 3,200 (14:25.20).
In relay action, Middletown’s frosh-soph boys and varsity girls won both 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
Among Upper Lake athletes in the field, Colton Goetjen placed fourth in the high jump (4-10) and was fifth in the discus (88-10) in the varsity boys division. In the varsity girls division, Delaney Love finished fifth in the discus (70-11) and eighth in the shotput (22-0); Angelica Ayala placed seven th in the shotput (22-6); and Dani Estrada finished 11th in the 100 (15.3).
Among frosh-soph boys, Alex Serrano took fifth in the 100 (13.10) and sixth in both the 200 (28.60) and discus (62-7), and Eduardo Mendoza and Edgar Garcia tied for eighth in the 100 meters (14.0).
Softball
At Rohnert Park, Technology defeated Upper Lake 20-10 in a six-inning North Central League II softball game. The Cougars had a 9-7 lead going to the bottom of the third inning when the Titans erupted for nine runs.
Upper Lake (1-1 league, 5-9 overall) finished with 12 hits.
