Succulent care workshop

The Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Garden Club will meet at noon on Tuesday, May 16 at the Lakeport Scotts Valley Women’s Club House at 2298 Hendricks Road. A light lunch will be served.

Bob Smart will present a program on the care of succulents. He will bring succulents for members to pot up. Also plans for the clubs upcoming plant sale, that will be located at the Kiwanis Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast and Craft Fair area, will be finalized.

7th annual VA2k Walk and Roll

Focusing on helping homeless Veterans and promoting active lifestyles, the 7th annual VA2K Walk & Roll event will be held on May 17 at the Clearlake VA clinic starting at 4:45 p.m. Meeting location will be at the rear of the building in the enclosed patio region. The address for the Clearlake VA clinic is 15145 Lakeshore drive, Clearlake.

The VA2K event includes a short two kilometers walk (1.24 miles) and the community is invited to participate. The event is free and it is suggested that participants be at back of the VA clinic 15 minutes prior to the start.

Participants are encouraged to bring a voluntary donation in the form of items such as shirts, shorts, and toiletries items. These donations will be collected and distributed to local homeless Veterans. There will also be a donation bin at the Clearlake VA clinic on 15145 Lakeshore drive in Clearlake. Donations are not required to participate.

Nationally, since 2011, donations of these type valued at more than a million dollars has been raised for homeless Veterans.

“The VA2K Walk & Roll is one of the ways we encourage our staff to adapt healthy lifestyles. It’s also a great way for them to help homeless Veterans,” said Carol Brown, Clinical Director of the Clearlake VA clinic.

Life jacket giveaway

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 8-8 of Lake County, will hold its annual complimentary Life Jacket Giveaway for children on Sunday, May 21 at Redbud Park gazebo in Clearlake starting at 9:30 a.m.

This life jacket giveaway is a project made possible by a grant from the local Wal-Mart in Clearlake. The event will include the weighing, fitting and distribution of the jackets for children 12 years of age or younger. A parent or guardian must accompany the child and complete an information slip to be eligible to receive the free life jacket. The event will end at 1 p.m. or when the supply of life jackets are gone.

On the same day, the flotilla will also hold a complimentary vessel safety check for boat owners and will be held at the Redbud Marina staring at 9:30 a.m. Boats can be on a trailer or in the water at the docks. This vessel safety check is free of charge and takes only a few minutes to complete.

Redbud Park & Marina is located at 14655 Lakeshore Drive in Clearlake. Flotilla 8-8 encourages boat owners and especially those with children to stay safe on the water by utilizing these complimentary services offered. Play it safe “Wear Your Life Jacket”!

Device Workshop

How do you check the daily weather forecast? A recent U.S. Cellular survey indicated that 93 percent of smartphone owners use a weather app on their device to check the forecast once a month or more.

During a free Device Workshop on May 21, U.S. Cellular associates will show people how they can rely on their smartphone, such as the Apple iPhone 7 or Samsung Galaxy S8, to stay informed, prepared and connected with a variety of apps and accessories when severe weather threatens or hits. Individuals do not need to be U.S. Cellular customers to attend.

“Spring weather can be unpredictable and change in an instant,” said Erryn Andersen, U.S. Cellular’s director of sales in the northwest. “Smartphones and a number of free apps can help you stay ahead of Mother Nature. Our associates can share a number of smartphone tips that can help you stay informed if the skies quickly turn from sunny to stormy.”
