UKIAH >> The Ninth Annual Senior All-Star Baseball Game is scheduled for June 4 at the Mendocino College baseball diamond. First pitch is 12:15 p.m.
It will be East against West as graduating high school seniors from Lake, Sonoma, Mendocino and Napa counties are invited to participate in the contest. Players from Lake County teams make up the bulk of the East squad while the West team consists of players from Cloverdale, Fort Bragg, Willits, St. Helena and Anderson Valley high schools.
The Cloverdale American Legion is the game’s sponsor. While admission is free to the game, donations are encouraged, according to game director Juan Jauregui.
“Whatever we raise goes back into the program so that we can hold future All-Star games,” Jauregui said.
Even the umpires who work the game do so at a discounted rate, according to Jauregui.
Players from additional high schools may be added during the sign-up process and will be assigned to either the East or West rosters as appropriate, according to Jauregui.
Kelseyville head coach Lou Poloni will once again skipper the East roster. Poloni and Jauregui have been involved in the All-Star game since its inception in 2009. A year ago, Poloni coached the East to a 10-5 victory as Kelseyville ace Noah Lyndall picked up the win. The West won 6-2 in the 2015 game as Dimitri Betts of Willits outdueled Clear Lake’s Jordan Chana, who was coming off a 10-0 high school season.
A concession stand will be in operation during the game with proceeds used to keep the game going.
“We’re hoping to get some new blood into the game this year,” Jauregui said with an eye toward landing at least one Upper Lake player for the East roster. “We’ve never had an Upper Lake player participate.”
“It’s a great event and a lot of fun,” Jauregui said.
