DAVIS >> This week Congressman John Garamendi hosted his annual Congressional High School Art Competition, featuring the works of 108 students throughout the 3rd Congressional District, including 14 from Lower Lake High School.

The event, held at the Pence Gallery in Davis, celebrated the talents of young artists in the region and the teachers, parents, and mentors who encourage them. The 108 pieces submitted set a new record for Congressman Garamendi’s district, making this year’s contest the most competitive yet.

A panel of independent judges representing art agencies throughout the 3rd District determined the winners.

This year’s first place winner was Alison Rubin, a junior at Davis Senior High School, for her piece, “Innocence.” Her work will be featured at an exhibit at the U.S. Capitol for a year, and she won a pair of plane tickets to travel to Washington, DC to attend a ceremony with the winners from Congressional districts across the country.

The Lake County award winner was Catherine Oswalt, a senior at Lower Lake High School, for her “Clayton Fire Documentation.” It was part of a collection of works submitted by Lower Lake High School students documenting the aftermath of the Clayton Fire that struck substantial portions of Lake County. Oswalt’s work will be featured in the Congressman’s Fairfield office for a year.

“I’m always impressed by the quality of art that we receive every year, but 3rd District students really outdid themselves this year,” Garamendi said. “With 108 pieces submitted, we shattered our previous record. Congratulations to Alison Rubin, Amy Fang, Catherine Oswalt, and all of the winners.”

An online gallery of all submissions is available on the Congressman’s Flickr page.
