FRESNO >> The Golden State Wrestling Club of Upper Lake sent its three top wrestlers to the California USA Wrestling Freestyle State Championships last weekend in Fresno and didn’t come away empty handed.
Beside pursuing a state title, Golden State wrestlers needed a top-three finish to qualify for the Fargo Nationals in July.
Two of Golden State’s wrestlers qualified Fargo and one of them, Upper Lake High School sophomore Junior Fernandez, won a state title in the 126-pound Cadet division where he was the No. 3 seed. Fernandez dominated his bracket for the most part, pinning one opponent, scoring technical falls over three others, and winning by 13-12 decision against another in the semifinals.
Fernandez also won a California USA Wrestling folkstyle state title back in March. He could earn a coveted triple crown of wrestling by winning at Greco State in early June.
Upper Lake High School junior Christina Wilson just missed a state title but did qualify for Fargo by placing second in the 132-pound junior girls bracket. She went 2-1, both of her victories by technical fall.
Adriana Lopez, a sophomore at Upper Lake High, was slowed by an injury and came in sixth in the 122-pound junior girls bracket.
