LAKE COUNTY >> Kelseyville High School senior three-sport star Logan Barrick and Upper Lake High School volleyball and wrestling junior standout Christina Wilson are among the finalists for Lake County Record-Bee Athlete of the Year honors.
Juniors and seniors who compete in at least two varsity sports and are in good academic standing at their respective schools are eligible to receive the award, which has been presented annually since the 1987-88 sports season.
Five male and five female athletes are honored as finalists leading up to the naming of the winners, which are selected by the Record-Bee. Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year winners for boys sports and girls sports will be named at a later date.
Barrick, who is currently involved in the North Coast Section Division IV baseball playoffs, started at quarterback for the Knights in football, was a key component of the school’s North Central League I championship team in boys basketball, and has already set a county single-season for most wins by a baseball pitcher (13) during the 2017 season, that after leading the Knights to an undefeated league campaign.
In terms of All-League honors, Barrick was honored in all three sports — as an honorable mention in both football and basketball and as a co-MVP in baseball. All three of Barrick’s teams reached the playoffs. In fact, he guided the sixth-seeded football squad to the NCS Division V semifinals after wins over Arcata and Middletown in the opening rounds.
Wilson earned first-team honors in volleyball for a Cougars squad that posted one of its best records in years, going 11-3 in the NCL II and 16-5 overall, including a berth in the NCS Division V playoffs.
In wrestling, Wilson had a breakout season that included a sectional championship at 126 pounds and a third-place finish in the CIF State Championships. Along with teammate Adriana Lopez, who won a sixth place medal, the two are the first Upper Lake females to win medals at the state tournament.
Wilson’s only loss at the state tournament came in the quarterfinals by 8-3 decision to Haley Valdez of San Dimas High School. The same two wrestlers later met in the third-place match and it was Wilson prevailing 3-2.
