UPPER LAKE >> Lake County Wine Studio (LCWS) is hosting an artist show and wine reception featuring wines from R Vineyards and artist Peter Shandera. The event runs today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Encouraged by a teacher in Junior High School, artist Peter Shandera began to lay a foundation while in High School to pursue a career in the arts. He majored in Fine Arts while attending the California College of Arts & Crafts (CCAC), and then at California State Hayward where he studied with Corbin Lepell. Shandera’s artistic interests during his college years varied to include photography, graphic arts, mud sculpting along the SF Bay shoreline, creation of 8mm film that became part of Garcia Lorca’s production — House of Bernarda Alba, worked with film and art displays at the Santa Barbara County Schools library, and then returned to CCAC as a Printmaking major.
Shandera’s artistic abilities led him to a 5 year position as a Landscape Designer with the Hayward area Recreation and Park District, where he performed land surveys and designed numerous parks and park amenities under the watchful eye of landscape architect, Wesley Sakamoto.
Shandera has photographed and produced performance programs for the Oakland Ballet and the Ed Mock Dance Company in San Francisco, has taught youth and adult classes in printmaking and photography, and has been involved in theatre arts, designing and constructing sets for community and junior college productions. Following this period of his endeavors, Shandera became a graphic designer for environmental engineering firms in the Bay Area, traveling throughout the Western States to photograph projects and report on land use concerns.
In 2000, Shandera began to scale back on work and moved to Lake County. While he has continued to work on various contracted jobs in the Bay Area and beyond, he has embraced Lake County as his home and has become involved in the Arts community here, participating and winning awards in local gallery shows and EcoARTs installations. He has opened his Hillcrest Studio in Clearlake to classes and regular artist’s gatherings. A popular monthly artist’s meet-up at the studio named the Second Sunday Salon is now in its third year.
The $15 ($12.50 for Studio club members) wine sampler is paired with appetizers by Hillcrest Kitchen.
Lake County Wine Studio is a gallery for display of arts and a tasting room, wine bar and retail shop for the fine wines of Lake County. Artist’s shows are held on a monthly basis with art and wine receptions held the first Friday and subsequent Saturday of each month.
The gallery is located at 9505 Main Street in Upper Lake. It is open Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m., and Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. The Shandera art show will be on display for the full month of June.
