The Clear Lake Cardinals haven’t had much success breaking the stranglehold the Kelseyville Knights and St. Helena Saints have had on the North Central League I varsity volleyball scene this decade — although Middletown did secure a co-championship in 2012 along with St. Helena — but the Cardinals are certainly working in that direction prior to the start of the 2017 campaign, which gets underway in August. One of many open gyms held by Clear Lake High School took place on Monday afternoon where several returning Cardinals were busy working on a variety of skills as they gear up for a shot at the league title. Clear Lake returns nearly all of its starters from a 2016 club that finished second with a 12-2 record.
