Oroville >> While all animals were picked up from the emergency center by the Saturday deadline, some didn’t get to go home, including a donkey and a cat that suffered burns in the Wall Fire.
The donkey, “Dane,” was left during the evacuations by his owner, whose house was lost in the fire. Dane was then picked up by the North Valley Animal Disaster Group and brought to Look Ahead Veterinary Services in poor shape.
Veterinarian Michele Weaver said he is doing much better and expects he will be able to go to the home of his new adoptee within the next month. Dane has been treated primarily for burns to his face, left side, ears and groin, she said. With IVs, anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics — and some treats — he’s on the road to recovery.
“He’s in a lot less pain now,” Weaver said. “He’s starting to eat well. He likes cookies.”
Dane is probably 8 or 9 years old, the vet said. The clinic has been receiving food and monetary donations to help pay for Dane’s medications.
The volunteer animal rescue group said Monday it was making a Go Fund Me crowdfunding page for “Dane the Donkey.” Those interested in donating or who would like more information can follow the North Valley Animal Disaster Group on Facebook or see the website nvadg.org.
Another Wall Fire burn victim, a cat, is in the care of Valley Oak Veterinary Center. Sandy Doolittle with the North Valley Animal Disaster Group said the family was away from home when it went up in flames and family members were unable to get back to save their cat. Fortunately the kitty escaped, was rescued and is now receiving medical care.
The animal rescue group recommends pet owners have a plan in place in the event they have to evacuate. In the first place, people should make sure their pets are microchipped and would have a place to stay if the home was lost. When evacuating, the pet should come along with the family, the rescue group advises.
As it’s put on the website, “If it isn’t safe for you to stay, it isn’t safe for your pet either.”
