LAKEPORT >> The passes were crisper and the routes run by receivers a little better during week two of the Lake County summer passing league at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.

Varsity seven-on-seven play took place at Don Owens Stadium where four teams scrimmaged at the same time – two on each side of the 50-yard line. Junior varsity teams played on the lower field behind the Clear Lake High gym. All five county schools participated. One team has a bye during each session because of the odd number.

Passing league is a four-week-long scrimmage that emphasizes passing offense regardless of whether teams plan to throw the ball much during the upcoming season. Teams start at the 40-yard line and try to score as many touchdowns against the opposing defense in the time allotted. Once a touchdown is scored the ball is placed back at the 40 and the drill starts all over again.

Lower Lake three-year varsity veteran Hokulani Wickard led the Trojans on several scoring drives during their matchup with Middletown. Wickard has passed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two varsity campaigns and has a shot at reaching 5,000 yards for his career with a strong 2017 season. He enters a new year with 3,157 yards and 27 touchdowns.

With Alex Adams returning for a third season at quarterback for Clear Lake, Luke Holt coming back for a second year at Middletown, and Ray Moran entrenched as Upper Lake’s new varsity quarterback after serving as a backup a year ago, the only quarterback job up for grabs in the county is at Kelseyville. Aiden McAdon worked out there on Monday although coach Erick Larsen said the Knights are “experimenting” with different players as they work on replacing the graduated Logan Barrick.

Week three of passing league takes place next Monday at Kelseyville beginning at 5:30 p.m. Fans are welcome to attend free of charge.
