lake county >> The Lake County Chamber of Commerce and the Lake County Fair Board are working together to bring back the live-fish educational display during the annual event.

Representatives from the chamber and fair attended the Lake County Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee (LCFWAC) to request support for the display under consideration. The Advisory Committee was approved to give a donation of $1,500 toward the tank.

An estimated total cost for the display is $7,000.

Greg Giusti, Chair of the Advisory Committee said the fair used to have the fish display years ago. Somewhere along the line, however, the fair board dropped the display.

The donation will help pay for the rental of a fish tank.

“This is a tank that will show up on the back of a semi-truck, it’s huge, and it’ll be coming from Colorado,” Giusti said.

It is hoped the fish display will contribute an additional and popular attraction. Guisti anticipates that it will feature both fish species common to Clear Lake, as well as non-native fish with educational information.

In the past, local fishing guides would use the tank to demonstrate casting and other fishing techniques.

The donation is possible through the funds that collected through the payment of ticket citations. Currently, the Agriculture Commissioners Office has a budget of almost $20,000.

“When a Game Warden writes a ticket or a citation and the courts collect on that, a percentage of those funds go into a budget item,” Giusti said. “It’s one our primary functions to come before the board and suggest how to spend some of that money.”

The LCFWAC is a committee that is made by the Board of Supervisors with members that they choose for a two year term. Their primary function of the committee is to review and bring recommendations to the Board in regards to fish and wildlife protection, education, recreation and conservation.

This committee was established in 2012.

The two organizations will continue to look for funds for the fish display.
