KELSEYVILLE >> It’s a sweep for the orange and black in 2016-17. From the start of the high school sports season to the end, Kelseyville High School’s girls and boys dominated the local sports scene, be it fall, winter or spring. They didn’t win everything to be sure, but they won plenty.
Sweeping the Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year awards was just the cherry on top of the Knights’ dessert of a sports year. Both Coach of the Year winners – Lou Poloni (baseball) and Jeff Bour (softball) – and this year’s three top athletes – Riley Goff (girls) and Logan Barrick and Kyle Ellis (tie for the boys) – wore the orange and black with a great deal of satisfaction and pride. All had great seasons and are moving on to the college ranks.
Kelseyville’s sweep of the Athlete of the Year awards in 2016-17 gives the school a slight lead over Clear Lake – 21-19 – in the number of individual winners in the award’s 30-year history. The tie between Barrick and Ellis marks only the second such tie in the award’s history. The only other time it happened was in 2008-09 when Clear Lake’s Kaila Sterbank and Middletown’s Kelsey Welton tied for the girls award.
What will the 2017-18 sports season bring? It’s hard to say, but it will have a tough act to follow given the across-the-board accomplishments of the Knights this season.
