The Lake County Office of Education is highly involved in the early education of Lake County children.

LCOE administers 13 part-day State Early Connection preschools around Lake County which serve approximately 350 three and four year olds each year. Each preschool is licensed and located on an elementary school campus, supporting a smooth transition from preschool to Kindergarten. Lake County Preschools provide a core class curriculum, Houghton Mifflin Pre K Curriculum: Where Bright Futures Begin. This curriculum is developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate for 3 and 4 year olds and makes learning fun.

In addition, the LCOE preschool program provides a meal to the children, parent education, referrals to health and social services for families, and professional development opportunities to the staff at the preschools.

Lake County Office of Education state preschoolers’ days are filled with meaningful activities that are intentionally planned to support the child’s total development. “Education that is not only curriculum based but includes play supports a child’s development. All of LCOE’s Early Connection sites allow and support both structured and free-play time,” states Lake County Superintendent, Brock Falkenberg.

Additionally, early literacy is the foundation for success in school and the Lake County Office of Education preschool teachers work to develop emerging literacy skills by encouraging and expanding on the child’s oral language development. Age appropriate activities are planned to encourage exploration and growth in math, science, art, alphabet knowledge, vocabulary, language, syntax, and phonemic awareness.

The goal of the Lake County Office of Education preschools is to not only prepare children for Kindergarten but to establish a love for lifelong learning.
