UPPER LAKE >> Hailey Reams scored with an assist from teammate Katlyn Minnis with 15 minutes remaining to snap a 1-all tie and lift the Upper Lake Cougars to a 2-1 victory over the Lower Lake Trojans in non-league girls soccer action Monday at Upper Lake High School.
Upper Lake is now 2-0 against Lower Lake this season and 3-0 overall. The Cougars opened the season with a 5-4 win at Lower Lake earlier this month.
“It was a tough game,” Upper Lake coach Daniella Santana said.
All of the scoring took place in the second half. Minnis’ goal early in the second half gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage as Nastasia Cullen picked up the assist. Lower Lake tied the game up a few minutes later before Reams scored the game-winning goal.
Santana credited Upper Lake goalie Cheyanne Obedoza with keeping the game scoreless in the first half as she logged 13 saves. The Cougars’ first-year coach also praised the play of two of her captains, Julia Mooney and Laisha Altimirano.
Upper Lake travels to Tomales on Wednesday and returns homes Friday to play Clear Lake at 4 p.m.

At Upper Lake, Bailee Byrd’s goal in the first half accounted for Upper Lake’s scoring in a non-league loss to Technology.
“We’re struggling to get pressure on the ball when we need it,” Upper Lake coach Kevin O’Brien said. “And we need better communication out there. We’ve been playing so many games we really have had a chance to work on those things in practice.”
Upper Lake is now 0-3.
The Cougars received solid play from center/back Jason Campfield, a sophomore, and from utilityman Richard Guadycan, a freshman, according to O’Brien.
“He (Campfield) stepped up,” O’Brien said. “Richard show a lot of hustle out there. He puts forth the maximum effort.”
The Cougars are on the road Wednesday in Lower Lake and travel Friday to the McKinleyville Tournament.

At Kelseyville, Kelseyville kept it close before Roseland University Prep of Santa Rosa broke the game wide open with three late goals.
“It was closer than the game score,” said Scott Conrad, who is filling in for head coach Eduardo Ledesma until his return from a trip to Mexico where he is visiting relatives. “The kids played better than the first game (a 4-0 season-opening loss at Anderson Valley last week). “We have a lot of talent but it’s a pretty inexperienced group.”
Kelseyville has won three straight North Central League I titles under Ledesma, but graduation hit the Knights hard after last season.
“We didn’t transition very well from offense to defense and back,” Conrad said.
Francisco Duarte spent most of the game in goal for the Knights and allowed only two shots to get past him.
“He had several saves and played very well,” Conrad said.
“I think they’re going to have a good team before it’s over,” Conrad said.

At Upper Lake, in a non-league match where all four sets were up for grabs, the Fort Bragg Timberwolves beat the Upper Lake Cougars 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22.
Christina Wilson’s 18 kills and 24 digs powered the Cougars (1-2) while setter Neveah Solorio finished with 17 assists, 20 digs and three kills. Also for Upper Lake, Brenna Sanchez had six kills, three blocks and five digs while Jasmin Velsaco added four kills, four blocks and four digs.
“It was a pretty even match,” Upper Lake coach Raelene Cromwell said. “It came down to a few dropped balls, but they kept their heads up and played very hard.”
Fort Bragg also beat Upper Lake 25-20, 25-23 in junior varsity action despite strong serving from Upper Lake’s Seneca Snow and Angel O’Sullivan, according to coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena. “They had some great serves today, keeping us in the game.”
Added Gudmundson Pena, “We were out of it today. We had a slow start and had trouble gaining the lead.”
Upper Lake’s varsity opens its North Central League II schedule on Tuesday in Santa Rosa against Roseland Collegiate Prep. There is no JV match. The Cougars return home Friday to face Credo in another league match.
