UPPER LAKE >> The Upper Lake Cougars and Clear Lake Cardinals beat the heat although it drained both teams on Friday afternoon during a non-league girls soccer game in Upper Lake.

Clear Lake prevailed 5-1 after building a 5-0 lead. Julia Mooney broke up the shutout with a goal late in the second half as Upper Lake fell to 3-2 on the season. Clear Lake improved to 2-3.

“They came out a lot tougher than we did and they were more aggressive,” Upper Lake coach Daniella Santana said of the Cardinals.“Their players are a lot more technical.”

On one of the hottest days of 2017, both teams received a hydration break in each half and halftime was lengthened so that players on both sides could rest and hydrate.

“And both of us subbed constantly to make sure we didn’t have any problems,” Santana said.

Keeper Cheyanne Obedoza had 27 saves for Upper Lake.

Clear Lake’s scoring was not reported.

Upper Lake returns to action Wednesday against Anderson Valley in Boonville.

In other girls soccer action Friday:

Fortuna 3, Middletown 0

At Middletown, the Fortuna Huskies didn’t let a little thing like triple-digit heat slow them down as they shut out Middletown in non-league action.

“We had a lot of shots on goal but couldn’t get them to fall,” Middletown coach Lamont Kucer said.

Fortuna led 1-0 after the first half.

Standouts for Middletown (3-2-2) were Courtney Gillies, Kelsey Lemoine and Kassi Agapoff, according to Kucer.

Upper Lake’s junior varsity squad also came away with a 25-18, 25-8 win.

“The heat didn’t seem to affect us today,” Upper Lake JV coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena said. “All of the girls played great today.”
