With the mercury nearly popping out of the top of the thermometer when they met Friday afternoon in Upper Lake, the host Cougars and visiting Clear Lake Cardinals squared off in a non-league game won 5-1 by Clear Lake. Plenty of sweat was shed on a day when the temperature climbed as high as 110 degrees. Because of the excessive heat, hydration timeouts were taken in both halves and halftime was extended to give players a chance to recover. Both coaches substituted liberally during the match to keep players as fresh as possible. The Cougars (3-2) are home today to play Roseland University Prep at 4 p.m. Clear Lake’s next scheduled game is Tuesday at home against St. Helena, the league opener for both teams. The Cardinals are 2-3 overall.
