WILLITS >> Nayla Chaires scored two girls and Sophie Kucer added a goal and four assists on Thursday as the Middletown Mustangs turned back the Willits Wolverines 7-1 in North Central League I girls soccer action at Willits.
Six different Mustangs cracked the scoring column as Middletown improved to 2-0 in the league standings and 6-2-2 overall. Besides Chaires and Kucer, Kassi Agapoff, Leyla Chairez, Aly Ferguson and Julisa Garcia all had goals.
Garcia, a junior midfielder, was the player of the game for the Mustangs, according to Middletown head coach Lamont Kucer.
“She just played a great game,” Kucer said. “Passing, defense … she was all over the field.”
Kelsey Lemoine anchored the Middletown defense, according to Kucer.
“She was so solid on defense,” Kucer said.
Middletown led 4-1 at halftime.
The Mustangs are home Monday for a non-league game against Calistoga at 4 p.m. They resume league play Tuesday at home against Cloverdale at 5:30 p.m.
In other girls soccer action Thursday:
Fort Bragg 3, Kelseyville 0
At Fort Bragg, it was a long day on the pitch for the Kelseyville Knights, who were shut out by the Fort Bragg Timberwolves.
“We improved in the second half but we came out flat in the first half and that’s the tale of the tape,” Kelseyville coach Eric Hoefler said.
All the scoring took place in the first half.
“We had some good hustle but not enough hustle,” Hoefler said. “When you get beat to every ball and start passing it to the other team it makes for a long afternoon.”
Kelseyville is now 1-1 in league play and 2-3 overall.
The Knights host Willits on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Clear Lake 6, Lower Lake 1
At Lower Lake, Tianna Jardstrom scored twice in the first half to propel the Clear Lake Cardinals to their first league win of the season. Kortnie Reynolds, Carina Martinez, Lexi Burke and Nicole Duncan also scored for Clear Lake (1-1, 3-4).
Tanya Vasquez collected two assists in the victory.
“It was a good win but it wasn’t one of our better games,” Clear Lake coach Tommy Burke said. “Our defense fell apart a little bit.” Clear Lake had a 4-1 lead at halftime. Goals by Burke and Duncan in the second half put the game out of reach.
Clear Lake hits the road next to play Fort Bragg on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) and Willits on Thursday (4 p.m.).
Lower Lake is now 0-2 in league and 0-5 overall. Scoring wasn’t reported.
